NORTHEAST WYE AT CP OSBORN PLACED UNDER IHB DISPATCHER CONTROL

On December 16, 2000, The IHB and NS signal department forces completed in-service testing on a joint project to install power switches on the Northeast Wye at CP Osborn. This change places these switches under the control of IHB’s dispatchers at our Calumet City operations center.

Before completion of this project, NS trains coming to and from the IHB had to stop and use hand operated switches to access the wye track. This caused the grade crossings at 169th and Kennedy (Westbound moves) and 165th Street (Eastbound moves) to be blocked for excessive periods.

IHB Dispatcher control minimizes these delays since stopping is no longer necessary, and the total run time for the NS trains will decrease by 25 to 30 minutes. Residents of Hammond will experience fewer delays at railroad crossings with this change.

Future projects on the IHB are the remote control of Hohman Tower and the reconstruction of CP Harvey to add a third IHB track.
